How Prioritising Your Health Boosts Your Business

The importance of self care as a founder

Maintaining good health and well-being is paramount when running a business and yet so many business owners don’t prioritise it.

Oh yes, I see you - pushing those walks down your to-do list, forgetting to drink water, skipping breakfast, grabbing 4-5 hours sleep…

You’re not alone, buddy. But today, I want to highlight 7 key reasons why prioritising health and well-being is essential for business success.

And note what I said there… ‘essential for business success’, not just something you ‘should’ do to look after yourself.

Optimal Performance

Your health directly impacts your ability to perform at your best. When you prioritise your physical and mental well-being, you increase your energy levels, focus, and productivity.

By taking care of yourself, you can operate at peak performance, make sound decisions, and effectively lead your team and business.

I’ve no doubt that if I asked you: ‘would you like to run your business from a place of peak performance?’ you would say hell yes. So, remember that this is available to you if you decide to go after it.

Stress Management

You don’t need me to tell you that running a business can be highly stressful, with demanding workloads, tight deadlines, and constant pressure.

But being faced with stressful situations doesn’t necessarily mean you need to take on that stress yourself.

Neglecting your health leads to a reduction in your ability to manage stress, leading to burnout, reduced creativity and decreased problem-solving abilities.

On the flip side, prioritising health and well-being helps you to manage stress, promotes resilience and enables you to handle challenges more effectively.

Work-Life Balance

Neglecting health and well-being often goes hand-in-hand with having an unhealthy work-life balance. Striving for success at the expense of personal well-being generally leads to strained relationships, decreased satisfaction and a lack of fulfilment.

When you make the commitment to prioritise your health, you create boundaries and can allocate time for personal activities, achieving a harmonious work-life integration.

Whilst some see time away from work as frivolous when growing a business, the fulfilment and recuperation you get from this time actually feeds into your business when you’re back at your ‘desk’, creating a positive ripple effect.

Mental Clarity and Decision Making

Undeniable fact: your mental well-being directly impacts your cognitive abilities, including decision-making skills, problem-solving capabilities, and creativity.

And we all know how many decisions there are to make in any given day when running a business.

When you prioritise your mental health, you enhance clarity, focus, and the ability to think strategically. This enables you to make informed decisions and seize opportunities that contribute to business growth.

It doesn’t take too many postponed or poorly made decisions before things start to go off the tracks, so maintaining this ability is critical.

Resilience and Adaptability

We all know that the plan never goes to plan. Uncertainties, setbacks and unforeseen challenges are all part of the normal course of business.

When you have excellent health and well-being you have far more resilience, enabling you to bounce back from setbacks, adapt to changing circumstances, and maintain a positive outlook.

Resilience is crucial for navigating tough times, learning from failures, and steering your business towards long-term success.

Employee Well-being and Engagement

With all of these benefits in mind, it’s easy to see why you would want your team to focus on their health too. Aside from the fact that you’re a stellar human who wants that for those around you. Obvs.

As a leader, your well-being sets an example for your team. Prioritising health and well-being fosters a positive work culture that values self-care, work-life balance, and overall wellness.

This, in turn, promotes employee engagement, reduces absenteeism, and enhances overall team morale, leading to higher productivity and lower turnover rates.

Longevity and Sustainable Success

Building a successful business is a marathon, not a sprint. It’s a well used saying for a reason.

Prioritising your health and well-being ensures that you have the stamina, endurance, and longevity to sustain your efforts over time. By taking care of yourself, you invest in the future of your business, ensuring that you can lead effectively and enjoy the fruits of your labour for years to come.

To wrap up

It’s undeniable that maintaining your health and well-being is integral to running a successful business.

By prioritising your physical and mental well-being, you enhance your performance, manage stress, maintain a healthy work-life balance, make better decisions, and foster a positive work culture. Investing in your health ultimately leads to sustainable success and a fulfilling entrepreneurial journey.

So, as you plan the coming weeks and months ahead, take a minute to think about what you’re doing on a daily basis to improve yours. If necessary start small, but start nonetheless.

Quite literally, every step, no matter how small, counts.
